Next week’s program:Kelly Moore announced that Kelly Malone from Four Oaks is our speaker next week.

Speaker:   Kelly Moore introduced Tom Janusz, owner of Cedar River Brewing Company.  Tom gave a very interesting talk on how to brew beer.  Needless to say he had a captive audience, none more so than our very own Kelly Moore.  Tom and his wife have owned CRBC since July 2004, but Tom has been with the company since in opened 11 years ago as General Manager.  Coincidentally, Kelly Moore has been a patron for 11 years as well.

He gave a brief history of beer, dating back to when Kelly Moore was an infant.  Not really, beer has been around for approximately 7000 years.  It is one of the oldest fermented beverages, much older than wine.  CRBC is the first fully-operating brewery in Cedar Rapids since prohibition.

There are four basic components (or food groups as Kelly Moore would like to think) in beer:

1. Water – composes 90-95% of beer and is the most important ingredient.  CRBC uses regular CR water but tests it regularly for consistency.

2. Barley malt – is the basic grain that is used most often to make beer.

3. Hops – introduces bitterness into the mix.  Seattle, Portland and Europe provide most of the hops.

4. Yeast – the final component added once the wart goes into the fermenter.  There are about 1500 strains of yeast.

Tom loves his job and Kelly Moore appreciates that very much.  Although business is very good, Tom would most likely agree that if there were more Kelly Moores in CR, he could open another brewery.

Stop by CRBC sometime and not only can you try one of Tom’s personal favorites, you can visit with Kelly Moore as welll
