Happy Bucks: John Anderson – happy the Coe softball team overcame any negative Breitbach influence to finish 2nd nationally; John Schweitzer – ($2 Canadian coin + 5 cents) announced the upcoming Community Concert series and passed out brochures, and also announced New Horizons Band will be performing at the ballpark as part of the veterans’ day services on Memorial Day; Chuck Wehage – happy cataract surgery went well and he can now see; Don Grimm – learned that his cell phone has a locking mechanism to prevent inadvertent calls, however, he learned it doesn’t stop 911 calls; Pam Landon – interclub at Hiawatha yesterday went well and Shawn Johnson won the Dancing with the Stars last night; Kevin Carlson – happy because he told Keith he would be; Dan Breitbach – happy for the softball team; Bob Dye – his daughter’s niece was on the winning Messiah team that beat Coe; and Keith Sutherland – happy he still had a dollar. Upcoming Programs: Speaker: Chuck Wehage introduced Dr. Jim Bell who gave us a very informative talk on hospice care, and in particular, the emerging palliative care program. He is one of Chuck’s neighbors and by proximity, was roped into speaking. You gotta love Chuck’s methods. Jim is one of three palliative care specialists in the Cedar Rapids area. Palliative care refers to the period of time prior to the end-of-life period beginning when a patient, suffering from a terminal illness, needs care but doesn’t qualify for hospice. This form of care fills a very important void in helping terminally ill individuals both prepare for end-of-life decision-making as well as assisting them and their families in finding care. Jim said that with the ever-growing aging population (by 2025 a large percentage will be 85 and over) there is a critical need to address health care for this particular age group. Word for the day: Don Grimm submitted “John Anderson” as the word for the day. No one answered correctly but Don threw a buck in anyway. Meaning: “Full of malign, deadly, or noxious influence; pernicious, destructive, noxious, injurious, mischievous, malignant…especially toward Breitbach” OH WAIT! DID I SAY JOHN ANDERSON? I MEANT “baleful”. Sorry for the mistake…sort of…in a baleful sort of way. Submitted: Dan Breitbach - El Verboso Bloviatoro |
