Kiwanis Club of Cedar Rapids

Wednesday, July 7, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hatala, Esq.  21 Members in attendance.

Guests: Barbara Hoffman

Birthdays: Jim Moriarty – 7/13

Anniversaries:  None

Announcements: Mary Corkery’s Kernels project still needs volunteers; Cell phones will be collected by Ron Sunderman as a fund raiser.

Happy Bucks: Don Grimm told of a Sarah Palin being in Argentina at the same time as the governor of South Carolina, immediately lamented by Dick Boardman for a buck; Bob Dye was happy about a 95-kid caravan trip, David Graeff noted a numerical oddity coming up in minutes 01:23:45,7-8-9; Schweitzer had a dollar in appreciation of some event missed by the slow-writing scribe.  Suffering similar lack of documentation were Michael Poggenklass and Laurie Worden.  Sister Charmaine had a dollar, not exactly celebrating another upcoming round of chemo.

Upcoming Programs:

Speaker:  Craig Paulson, Minority Leader of the Iowa House delivered a sort of State of the State message.  Craig is a Monticello native and graduate of Washington HS.  He’s in his 4th term in the House and first term as Minority Leader.  The big chore for Des Moines is the budget.  It should only address “must do” items for the foreseeable future.  Spending has increased 20% over the last 3 years, the economy’s down.  Since Iowa lags in both downturn and recovery, the news will worsen in the mid term.  The ’09 budget ended on June 30 and is out of balance by maybe $130M.  The ’10 budget is also looking out of balance across the board.  The worst outlook is the ’11 budget which will be around $6B, and revenues will be perhaps 1B short of that.

Linn is a net donor county, so local problems could be worsened.

Overall, not a happy message.

Word for the day:  Numinous – divine, spiritual, revealing or suggesting the presence of a god; inspiring awe and reverence.
