Kiwanis Club of Cedar Rapids

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hatala, Esq.  28 Members in attendance.

Anniversaries:     None  

Announcements:  Rod Thorpe will be the go-to man for donations of eyeglasses that will go to Dr. Fitzgerald (last week’s speaker) for her October 7 mission trip to Kenya   

Happy Bucks:  Chuck Wehage was happy to be a day over 71; Dick Boardman was Unhappy that he got his salad late, and especially that Dan Breitbach got his early; Dan was happy he got his salad early; Barbara Hoffman was happy to be a Kiwanian; Doug Dix noted that despite  Dave Graeff’s clucking about the NL West, it is now leading the pack.  Also, Doug’s daughter is now at the University of Iowa, and his eldest daughter is getting married this week; Don Grimm lamented getting a pornographic service on Medicare’s 800 number (several members wanted the number); Keith Sutherland’s buck was missed by the scribe; Fran Brown was happy to have caught the 6th mole in her yard.  

Upcoming Programs:  Jeff Cash of Mercy Hospital 

Speaker:  Bob Dye’s courageous grandson, scheduled to speak today, was in the hospital facing more surgery.  Bob says the golf-ball sized mass in his lung will be removed, and chemo after that.  He received his new hi-tech leg three weeks ago – it plugs in for recharging.

Dan Breitbach reported that the Board has sent checks for $500 and $400 to the Community Health Free Clinic and Scattergood School, respectively.  $1000 has been committed for donation to Wheelchair Ramp Accessibility Program for a future project.

Dan says that his presidency, starting October 1, will concentrate on membership and volunteerism.  He will encourage the entire club to participate in service projects – not just the usual suspects.
