Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hatala, Esq.  26  Members in attendance.

Guests:  Byron Taber

Birthdays:   none

Anniversaries:  none

Announcements:  Dan Breitbach announced that he, Sister Charmaine and Bob Dye attended the Xavier Key Club induction ceremony last night.  The Club has 215 members.

The speakers’ signup sheet is going around.

Janet Blackledge will once again host the Jan. 7 noon meeting at her home since Elmcrest will be closed.  Any good will offerings for lunch will be donated to our Foundation.  As we get closer to the date, it is important that everyone RSVP so she knows how much to prepare.

Byron Tabor presented the Club with a check in the amount of $71.62 for our share of Peanut Day sales.  Our share is based on # of man hours of work that weekend.

Happy Bucks:   It was a happy day as Rod Thorpe opened things up with a $20 challenge: if at least $20 is donated, he will throw his $20 in.  The Club responded with $33.  The big question is: Do we trust Breitbach with the money in the absence of our trusted Treasurer, Gerry?  Time will tell.  It was decided that today’s Scribe be responsible for keeping an eye on Breitbach.

Speaker:  Mary Corkery introduced Matt Schaefer, an archivist at the Herbert Hoover Library.  Matt is one of four archivists there.  Matt had a PowerPoint presentation to augment his personal anecdotes.  There are over 14,000 boxes of Pres. Hoover’s papers that have been archived as well as 35,000 books in the collection.  Matt spends 1/3 of his time in ready reference, assisting researchers; another 1/3 in records preservation; and the final 1/3 organizing conferences.  He’s a 1979 graduate of Mt. Union College in Alliance, OH.  He’s enthused about his work as evidenced in his presentation.  This may come up in Jeopardy some day so pay attention: Q: Gold’s Gym has rated which President as the 9th most fit President up to and including Bush.  Ans: Herbert Hoover.

The program next week will be the CR Roughriders…so bring your sticks and pucks.

Word for the day:  Divarication: The action of separating or branching out in different directions, spreading out, divergence.  Don had to pony up a buck because Paula Grady correctly guessed the answer….or maybe it wasn’t a guess and she’s just that wise.
