Mike Shojgren and his wife are ordained ministers of the Salvation Army. SA is first and foremost a church, but are more universally known for their ministry to the poor, and for their disaster services. Here in Cedar Rapids, they run a basketball program for 2500 kids, and are helping to fill the void caused by the damage to the Boys and Girls Club facilities. They provide a summer day camp program, specialize in character building of youth, and are big in scouting. They have an active kitchen, and serve thousands of meals every week. They budget for support of 1500 needy families this holiday season, and have contacted 700 already. A great deal of their fund raising is done with the red kettles at holiday time. They must pay some bell ringers when volunteers are not available in sufficient numbers. They don’t mind this much, since the people they pay really need the opportunity. They budget raising $230K this season. SA has been around since 1888, and will be around for a lot longer. Word for the day: Expiation.
