Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

March 1, 2006

"Now More Than Ever"

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dix.  24 members were present.

Guests:  Peter Eyvindson, our speaker for the day

Birthday: none

Anniversaries:  none

Announcements: Today was the kickoff for the pancake breakfast.  Don Grim introduced Pancake Henry Danilow.  His introduction was:

"It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to a man who really needs a life ... I mean... no introduction?  A man who brings new meaning to 'feng shui' attire.  A man whose life's calling is still calling.  A man who, by any other name, would still be just a man.  Here to perform a few of his most memorable hit flapjack tunes, the incomparable, the incompetent, the inept, the indescribably melodic, Pancake Henry Danilow.  Rumor has it that Mr. Danilow is the great, great, great grand pappy to Mr. Long Beak himself, Barry Manilow."

Mr. Danilow then entertained (?) us with some of his most popular pancake hits.  You have all truly missed the meeting of the year.  Personally, I would like to know the name of his hairdresser.  Captains and ticket sale expectations will be announced soon.

Happy Bucks: David Graeff, Dan Breitbach, John Anderson, Don Grimm and Sister Charmaine.

Next week’s program:        3/08/06 - Margaret Fitzgerald, liaison between Cedar Rapids Community School District and the Cedar Rapids homeless population.

3/17/06 - Karla Stewart from Systems Unlimited

3/22/06 - the Honorable Kay Halloran, Mayor, Cedar Rapids

Speaker: Peter Eyvindson presented a delightful program from the Wings of Hope in Haiti.  Wings of Hope is a facility for disabled kids in Haiti and is significant in that it is kids caring for kids.  Peter brought with him Suni, a disabled young man who has spent most of his life in this facility but who is now one of the kids who is helping others.  Suni contracted a disease that killed his father and left Suni with some of the same symptoms of cerebral palsy.  His mother thought he was possessed with demons and abandoned him.  While most thought he would never learn to walk, talk or play, he learned all of these skills with the help of members of Wings of Hope.  Suni performed a dance for the club to demonstrate what Wings of Hope can do.

Word for the day: Motility - The capability or power of moving (as a quality of organisms).

Next Scribe:        3/08/06 - Chuck Wehage

 3/15/06 - David Graeff
