Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

April 5, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dix.      30 Members in attendance.

Guests:  Nancy Carlson and Carol Wehage

Birthdays: Jim Platt and Dick Boardman

Anniversaries:  Janet Blackledge

Announcements:  Jim Platt suggested that Catheryn Mannville could use a contact from the club to help brighten her spirits.  Dan Breitbach provided the status of the breakfast ticket sold so far. He also donned a hat garnished in strings of pearls and made some statements about the value of it to the effect that it may have been the headdress of an ancient tribal leader. Dan encouraged us to get those tickets sold

Happy BucksThere were several, but your scribe was not quick enough to catch names, etc. Rest assured the Kiwanis Club treasurer snapped up the bucks!

Next week’s program:

Speaker: The Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids presented by Darlene Schmidt, CEO, and Linda Kaas, her assistant. Our club was taken on a tour through the facility. The mission of the Free Clinic is "To provide medical and dental care to the uninsured and under-served of East Central Iowa through model community partnerships. The clinic's examination riims, pharmacy, labs, offices, structure is a $1.4 million gift from the Hall-Perrine Foundation. There are 27,000 people in Linn County without health insurance and earn less than $25,000 per year. There are presently 61 medical and dental staffers who are volunteers. Only two of the staff are paid. Manufacturers and local drugstores donate medical and pharmaceutical supplies.

Word for the dayBloviate. Rod Thorpe gave a suitable definition "right off the bat!". Don had a half page of meanings and usages - typical is "write over-expansively or with undue grandiosity".
