Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

May 31st,  2006

The meeting was called to order by First Vice President Chuck Wehage.      27 Members in attendance.

Guests: Bob McAvoy and soon-to-be member, Katie Hyatt Brasch

Birthdays: Not available

Anniversaries:  Not available

Announcements:  Sister Charmaine – represented the Club at Mt Mercy College’s annual recognition event where we were recognized for 5 consecutive years of providing scholarships to students; she also paid a $1 fine for forgetting the birthdays and anniversaries (as the scribe this week, I can only thank her for reducing my workload).

Pancake Henry gave a final report including a non-audited 3 year overview of the breakfast income-expenses.  Several members wanted to commend Pancake for breathing life into such a normally drab report, but decided against doing so due to time constraints.  Pancake accepts your silent commendations. (Webmaster Note:  the 3 year results are at the end of this newsletter.)

Happy Bucks:  Jim Platt – fined himself for missing the playground work day; Don Grimm & Chuck Wehage – making progress on a wheelchair ramp; Joe Nolte – son caught his first fish; Keith Sutherland – parents in town; Dan Breitbach – for the marvelous song selections and fine musical accompaniment by Fran

Next week’s program:  Janet Wilhelm of the Freedom Festival speaker next week

Speaker:  Kevin McCarville introduced Kurt Nelson, CEO of the Entrepreneurial Development Center (EDC).  Kurt is a native of Des Moines but has spent the past 30 years in CR.  He previously was the Pres/Partner of the Crystal Group.  In 2003 he served on the task force that founded EDC.

He gave a very interesting view of our economic situation in the Iowa City/CR corridor.  Last year Iowa ranked 50th in creating new businesses.  Of the top 25 corridor businesses, only 4 are home grown; and of the top 25 manufacturing companies in the corridor, 2 are based in Iowa.  According to Kurt, it is critical that we foster new business creation in our area if we are to remain a vibrant economic community.

EDC has three primary functions: 1) connect entrepreneurs with community resources; 2) provide guided professional consulting; and 3) provide networking and educational meeting monthly.  EDC has worked with 250 companies that are involved with interstate commerce, focusing on companies that bring new dollars to the community.  There is no cost to companies for its services.  EDC is located in the Armstrong Building downtown.

 Very nicely done, Kurt.

Word for the day:   Word master, Don Grimm provided: “hegemony”: Leadership, predominance, preponderance; esp. the leadership or predominant authority of one state of a confederacy or union over the others.
