Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club

June 7th, 2006

The meeting was called to order by  President President Doug Dix.     27 Members in attendance.

Guests: Bob McEvoy, from Arizona

Birthdays: Joe Nolte, June 5; Fran Brown, June 7

Anniversaries:  Doug Dix, June 1, 1999

Announcements:  At the board meeting on June 6, donations were approved for Tanager Place, Four Oaks, Families Helping Families, the Kiwanis Nebraska/Iowa District Foundation, and the Kiwanis International Foundation.  The club is looking for candidates for three new board members and one second vice president.

Happy Bucks:  Dan Breitbach, Doug Dix, Don Grimm, Dave Gosch, Bob McEvoy, and Ron Sundermann, who was happy that the most-recent car accident in his family did not result in a rate increase.

Next week’s program:   Scott Clark, who writes the "Company Doctor" column in the Corridor Business Journal.

Speaker:  Dave Graeff introduced Janet Wilhelm, executive director of the Freedom Festival, which last year drew 377,000 people.  Janet reviewed the events at this year's Freedom Festival, with emphasis on the following additions and changes:  The festival will span 13 days in 2006, an increase of one day.  This year, the events held at Kirkwood are scheduled the weekend after the Barbeque Roundup.  The Barbeque Roundup is in a new location this year, and will be co-located with the country music night.  A new Glenn Miller concert will be held on June 25, and a new concert for the 16-35-year-old demographic will be held at Hawkeye Downs, featuring Bowling for Soup.  (Bowling for Soup is so hot that the very mention of its name was enough to set off the Elmcrest fire alarm system.)  As is customary, the festival finale will be a 22-minute fireworks display at Mays Island.

Word for the day:   hortatory - Of, pertaining to, or characterized by exhortation or encouragement.

Submitted - Keith Sutherland
